There are more questions about Fishbird than there are answers. We believe that's a good thing: trying to get you to understand Fishbird a priori is like trying to tell you how something tastes. Information will only take you so far. At some point, you've got to take a bite. But we've done our best to respond to the most frequent questions we hear.
Haven't I done this before?
Nope. Even if you've been through Fishbird ten times, you've never done Fishbird.
Does Fishbird work with everyone?
Short answer, no. Fishbird partners with leaders, teams, and companies that are already successful (usually at the top of their respective industries) and are up to something bigger than they know how to do alone. You shouldn't need Fishbird: it is not for those who are interested in mastering or solving their current field of play. This isn't about getting better. Fishbird is for anyone who is committed to creating a new context in which to imagine the future.
How many people can participate in Fishbird at one time?
Fishbird sessions typically include anywhere from 10 – 30 participants. This is to ensure that all voices are heard during the initial two days of work. But we're always willing to make exceptions: we've done Fishbird with as few as two and as many as 50.
These are only the limits we place on individual Fishbird sessions. When working with larger companies, we facilitate multiple sessions to take teams of 100 to 100,000 employees through the work.
I don't have a team. Can I still do Fishbird?
No. Fishbird is about challenging and creating culture. While we do work with individual founders and leaders from time to time, Fishbird is at its most powerful when it is adopted into a team setting. So go get a team.
How much does Fishbird cost?
It depends on the client and scope. Please contact us here to discuss further.
Where do you do Fishbird?
Ideally, we would always facilitate Fishbird at our Fishbird House, a beautiful historic home located on the bank of the Delaware River in Burlington, NJ. We say this because we find it extremely important for teams to be invited into a new setting when imagining what's possible. A sense of place is paramount for this work: a place that has not been weighed down by the past. You have to get out of the uninspired conference rooms your team has been "brainstorming" in for however many years: they're just not good enough.
However, we realize that this isn't always possible, especially with global teams that may only meet once per year. For this reason, we travel all over the world to deliver Fishbird, usually finding ourselves in one of those conference rooms. Just know that we'll do whatever it takes to restore the integrity of these common areas: remove chairs, podiums, landlines, cables, pictures, etc. All of these things are, unconsciously, keeping us from being fully present.
Do you offer Fishbird in multiple languages?
Currently, Fishbird is only delivered in English. If you have a team of non-English speakers and are interested in Fishbird, please contact us here.
How do you measure the success of Fishbird?
Our greatest measure of success is our existence. Over the last two decades of work, we've grown solely through word of mouth. Our clients achieve unparalleled breakthroughs and want to share the source of their success with colleagues, partner teams, vendors, friends, and family. Some of our biggest advocates have brought us from company to company over the course of their leadership careers, or called us years after doing Fishbird to say that it was the most impactful conversation of their lives.
Where does the name "Fishbird" come from?
Many years ago, the founder of Smith, Meg Brunette, received a gift from one of our employees. It was a fish tank filled with water: inside, wax carvings of birds floated at varying depths. Fishbird was born.
